Determine Importance in a Fiction Text

The students have been reading fiction text to determine the most important events. They independently read a text and determine the most important events in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. They also collaborated with others who read the same text to discuss which events were important and share the book they read with the class. Next week, these readers will use this skill of determining importance to write summaries. It is amazing to see the growth these readers have made this year!

Measurement

The past two weeks our mathematicians have been understanding measurement and using a ruler to measure centimeters, inches, and feet. The students had the opportunity to explore and understand measurement. We discovered the following:

  • When using a ruler, start at the very beginning of the ruler. Beginning a measurement at one inch will not give an accurate measurement.
  • Inches are bigger than centimeters.
  • Centimeters help when measuring very small objects.
  • 12 inches make one foot.
  • 30 centimeters make one foot.
  • Three feet are in a yard.
We have enjoyed exploring measurement and using a ruler to be accurate!
