Spelling

This week, our second graders began participating in a spelling program called “Words Their Way.” This first week, students are becoming familiar with routines and are all practicing the same words. It is recommended your child practice their spelling words ten minutes at home each night. We have learned many engaging activities we can do at home to help us learn spelling words. Two of our favorites so far have been: “See it, Say it, Spell it” and “Rainbow Spelling". More activities can be found on the front of your child's Spelling Folder. This Friday, we will have our first spelling test. Next week, the students will receive specific spelling words that fit their needs. Thanks for encouraging your child to be the best speller they can be!

Punctuation

Over the last few weeks, second graders have been learning punctuation marks purpose and have been using new punctuation marks throughout their writing. As a class, we determined punctuation marks help us understand the type of voice to use while reading. To better understand this concept, the students are creating skits based off of books written by Mo Willems. They are collaborating with peers to rehearse lines and create costumes. The students will be performing their skits for one another next week. The students are so engaged and are loving "Readers Theatre"!

Martin Luther King Jr.

This week, students began learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and his impact on our country. The students shared the knowledge they learned from previous years and also asked questions they were still wondering. We read many books and learned new facts about his life. Next week, we will dive deeper to understand the message Martin Luther King Jr. conveyed. We will present our learning at our North Star Assembly on Friday, January 26th. Over the weekend, ask your child some facts he/she has learned about Martin Luther King Jr.
